English

Welcome to the Year 8 English page.

Here’s where you can find out everything you need to know about studying English in St. Paul’s.

Through English you get to improve and develop your Communication skills of Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing.

In Year 8 you will get to read a wide variety of texts including-

  • Prose (fiction and non-fiction)
  • Poetry
  • Drama (extracts from plays and drama based activities in class)

You will study the main features of each genre.   This will involve working with your teacher in class, working with your friends in groups and working on your own. Each month you will be asked to complete an assessed homework based on the work you have done in class.

Some of the units of work you will study are:

  • ‘Macbeth’
  • The Reader’s Theatre
  • Reading Images
  • Telling Traditional Tales from a different perspective – a really fun activity!

You will also have opportunities to use ICT which pupils enjoy very much.  One of the packages you will use is ‘Photo Story’ which allows you to create a slideshow of a  poem using pictures and music. Another package is ‘Comic Life’ which you can use to create comic versions of texts you have read or of your own stories.

Each week you will visit the Library during your English class.  Here you can borrow two books – one fiction and one non-fiction.   The Librarian will help you understand how the library is organised so that you can make the most out of it in English and in other subjects.

We look forward to seeing you all in September.
